Do you cringe a little when you hear these labels bandied around? I don’t blame you! These words are just tools. They can, and often do, serve a purpose, as they can help put a name to certain features of mental illness. Yet every single person with a mental issue is an entirely unique individual, and real people with mental illnesses usually do not fit neatly into little boxes. In our opinion some doctors, even very good psychiatrists, are a little too obsessed with labels. This, they think, helps them choose the “right” drug or treatment for the “correctly diagnosed” condition.
